A LITTLE HISTORY | In 1969, an American woman named Jane Kochenderfer moved to Malta with her husband Stan and six young children. Stan’s aviation company was important to the oil industry, prevalent in Malta at the time. Other American women were also arriving in Malta with their husbands who worked on the oil drills. These women, many mothers with young children, were from small towns, primarily in Texas, and had never been outside of Texas, let alone outside of the US. To help these young women adjust to their new lives in Malta, Jane started the American Wives Club. She wanted to create a network of support and to foster friendships. Even though now much bigger and wonderfully much more diverse, our purpose remains the same… to provide support to each other, to foster deep and lasting friendships. And we have great fun! |
TODAY | The six-member American Wives Club evolved into the Association of International Women in Malta with over 200 members representing 34 countries. AIWM is a social club, providing a welcoming space for women of all ages and nationalities living in Malta, either on a full time or part time basis. If you are a newcomer to Malta, membership in AIWM will provide a network of knowledgeable women, already established in Malta, able to help you settle in. Whether you’ve been in Malta for many years or a few weeks, membership in AIWM will provide you with lasting friendships. |

One of the best ways to get to know other members is to help volunteer your time and talent on one of our committees or at a special event. Our association is completely volunteer-driven, and our activities, events, and special interest groups are organized by our members. We hold at least one significant fundraising event each year and rely on a team of members to plan and coordinate this effort. The funds we raise are donated to Maltese charities that focus primarily on women and children. We are extremely proud that we have donated over €200,000 to local charities. |
